Air Force Wraps Up Competition at Pre-Nationals Meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Paced by seniors Justin Tyner and Katherine Ward, the Air Force cross country team concluded competition at the prestigious Pre-Nationals Meet on Saturday, Oct. 16, in Terre Haute, Ind. The men finished 18th in the 36-team White Race at La Vern Gibson Championship Course, while the women's team finished 37th among 40 teams.
Tyner clocked time of 24:31.6 to finish 43rd in a race that featured 274 runners. Tyner was one of three Falcons to finish within the top 100, as three of the four scoring runners placed within the top half of the field. Sophomore Jeremy Drenckhahn placed 69th with a time of 24:24.3, while junior Jim Walmsley finished 75th in 24:49.8. Classmate Jonathan Rock and freshman Isaiah Bragg rounded out the scoring finishers with times of 25:12.0 (115th) and 25:48.1 (168th), respectively.
Air Force tallied 470 points to place 18th in the 36-team race, which featured 10 of the top 30 teams in the most recent national rankings and six squads that are receiving votes. Oklahoma, ranked 16th in the national polls, won the meet with 106 points, while No. 19 BYU finished second with 138 points. Fourth ranked Colorado took third with 140 points, while No. 8 Portland (fourth, 146 points) and No. 13 North Carolina State (fifth, 177) rounded out the top five.
Freshman Lance Wolfsmith and senior Tyler Small also competed for the Falcons. Wolfsmith clocked a career-best time of 25:49.2 (171st), while Small finished in 26:24.9 (211th).
Ward paced the women's team with a 116th-place finish in the 274-runner race. Clocking a time of 21:58.0, Ward posted the squad's fastest time for the fourth consecutive week. Her time was a career-best by 0.3 seconds, bettering the time she set at the adidas Invitational earlier this season. Sophomores Jen Bremser and Morgan Mosby also placed within the top 200, as Bremser clocked a time of 22:34.5 to place 188th and Mosby finished 199th in a time of 22:43.1. Sophomore Melissa Fuerst (202nd, 22:44.4) and freshman Carley Gross (239th, 23:17.1) rounded out the Falcons' scoring finishers.
Air Force, competing against eight teams ranked in the top 30 and three teams receiving votes, recorded 944 points to finish 37th in the 40-team women's race. Fifth-ranked Georgetown won the race with 100 points, while ninth-ranked Colorado placed second with 123 points. No. 17 Stanford (third, 125 points), 12th-ranked Stony Brook (fourth, 216) and No. 27 Minnesota (fifth, 241) rounded out the top five.
Junior Katie Carroll and sophomore Kate Kanetzky also competed in today's race. Carroll clocked a time of 23:31.4 to finish 250th, while Kanetzky ran the 8K race in 23:36.0 to place 256th.
The Falcons return to action on Friday, Oct. 30, when they travel to Laramie, Wyo., for the 2010 Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships.
