Falcons Conclude Competition at Rocky Mountain Shootout

BOULDER, Colo. - With all five scoring runners placing within the top 20 of the University Division field, the Air Force men's cross country "B" team placed third at the 25th Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder, Colo., on Saturday, Oct. 2. Freshman Lance Wolfsmith paced the Falcons, placing 14th among University runners and 67th overall in a field that included 280 runners.
Clocking an 8K time of 27:13, Wolfsmith paced the Falcons' top five runners to finishes within the top 20 of the University field and within the top 100 overall. Three of the Falcons top four finishers were members of the freshman class, as classmates Gavin Owens and Matt Caldwell placed 16th and 18th among the University-level runners with respective times of 27:31 (83rd overall) and 37:38 (89th).
Sophomore Seth Pelletier finished between Owens and Caldwell, clocking a time of 27:73 to finish 17th in the University field and 87th overall. Sophomore Nick White rounded out the Falcons' top-five finishers, as he placed 19th among University runners and 95th overall in 27:45.
Host Colorado won its 20th Rocky Mountain Shootout title with just 18 points. Wyoming placed second with 40 points, while Air Force (84 points) and Northern Colorado (116 points) finished third and fourth, respectively, to round out the University Division team standings.
Eight additional Falcons competed at Colorado's annual meet. Junior Ryan Del Grosso and sophomore Ted Artz placed within the top half of the field, as they finished 114th (28:01) and 140th (28:33), respectively, in the overall field. Sophomore Gage Owens clocked a time just :01 behind Artz, placing 143rd in 28:43. Freshman Carson Fugal placed 153rd in a time of 28:40, while sophomore Tommy Heikkinen finished 181st with a time of 29:06. Sophomore Sam O'Hair (197th, 29:31), freshman Carl Eifert (198th, 29:32) and classmate Jake Hawkins (199th, 29:32) rounded out the Falcons' runners.
In addition, two members of the women's team competed as individuals in the 5,800-meter women's race that featured 187 runners. Sophomore Kate Kanetzky placed 63rd overall with a time of 23:55, while junior Alexa Ramsier placed 101st with a time of 24:56.
The Falcons will have a weekend off from competition before splitting up again for a pair of meets on Saturday, Oct. 16. Select members of the team will head to Terre Haute, Ind., for the prestigious Pre-Nationals Meet, while the rest of the team travels to Hays, Kan., for the annual Tiger Invitational.
