SANTA CLARA, Calif. -
Playing against two nationally ranked conference foes, the Air Force water polo team dropped a pair of games Sunday at The Rodeo, hosted by Santa Clara. The Falcons dropped a 9-6 decision to No. 11 UC Davis, while falling to 13th-ranked host Santa Clara, 8-6. With the losses, Air Force falls to 9-13 overall on the season and 4-9 in the WWPA.
Against UC Davis, Air Force took a 1-0 lead after one period and extended its advantage to 5-2 late in the second quarter. However, the Aggies scored with just 12 seconds remaining in the first half to cut the margin to two goals.
After the break, UC Davis continued its momentum, tying the game at 5-5 by the end of the third period. The Aggies then outscored the Falcons 3-1 in the final period to grab the 9-6 victory and remain undefeated in the WWPA.
Senior Bobby Geiger (Buellton, Calif.) led the Falcons' offense with three goals against UC Davis, while Cruz Smithson (So., Capistrano Beach, Calif.), Josh Stedman (Fr., Brea, Calif.) and Kurt Wallin (Sr., Temecula, Calif.) added a goal each. Meanwhile, sophomore goalkeeper Mike Fish (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) registered 11 saves, including nine in the first half.
In its final game of the weekend, Air Force took on tournament host Santa Clara. With the Broncos getting out to a 4-1 advantage at the end of the first half, the Falcons were never able to recover.
