INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Two members of the Air Force cross country team were selected to compete at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships, the NCAA Division I selection committee announced this afternoon (Nov. 14). Senior Justin Tyner and sophomore Jeremy Drenckhahn earned berths into the national championships after claiming all-region honors at yesterday's regional championship meet.
The two selections mark the most Air Force representatives at the national championship meet since the Falcons sent a full squad to the 2004 NCAA Championships. Air Force has sent full teams to the national meet 13 times, while being represented by individual runners an additional 12 years.
Tyner, who placed 10th at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships yesterday (Nov. 13), earned an automatic selection as one of the top four finishers not on an automatically qualifying team. Drenckhahn's 13th-place finish at the regional meet moved him into an automatic berth for the NCAA Championships after the next two teams from the Mountain Region earned at-large bids to the national meet.
New Mexico and Colorado earned the automatic team selections from the Mountain Region, while BYU and Northern Arizona received at-large bids. Joining Tyner (10th-place regional finish) and Drenckhahn (13th) from the region are Montana State's Patrick Casey (12th) and Utah Valley's Josh McCabe (17th).
Tyner and Drenckhahn, both natives of Minnesota, earned all-region honors yesterday with career-best top-25 finishes at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah. Tyner (Baxter) clocked a 10K time of 30:11.9 to finish 10th in the 110-runner field, while Drenckhahn (Plymouth) crossed the finish line in 30:17.3.
It will be the second appearance in as many years for Tyner, while Drenckhahn will make his first appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
In all, 31 teams and 38 individuals were selected to participate in both the men's and women's national races. The 2010 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be held on Monday, Nov. 22, at the La Vern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The 10-kilometer men's race is slated to run at approximately 12:48 p.m. (CST).
