Falcons Fall to 14th-Ranked Oregon State

Junior Alec Williams (Fultondale, Ala.) posted the lone victory for the Falcons, as the Air Force wrestling team dropped a 42-3 contest to No. 14 Oregon State Friday evening in Clune Arena. The Beavers (5-1-2) recorded five falls on the night as the Falcons (2-1) suffered its first dual loss of the season.
The dual began with the 125-pound bout, where freshman Greg Rinker (Northampton, Pa.) put up a tough fight against 13th-ranked Jason Lara before dropping an 11-5 decision. Following a fall by 15th-ranked Kelly Kubec in the 133-pound match, the marquee match-up of the evening came in the next bout with a battle between two nationally ranked wrestlers.
Air Force's Cole VonOhlen (So., Jackson, Minn.), ranked 11th in the nation, faced off against 12th-ranked Mike Mangrum in the 141-pound bout. The first period went scoreless, but Mangrum was able to put together a solid second period, taking a 5-1 advantage into the final period. While VonOhlen began to take control in the last two minutes, scoring a pair of takedowns and a reversal, time ran out as Mangrum escaped with the 11-8 decision.
The Falcons gave up another fall at 149 pounds, despite a strong start from freshman Josh Kreimier (Fort Collins, Colo.). Meanwhile, Air Force finally got on the scoreboard with Williams' 4-2 decision at 157 pounds. Williams was able to score a pair of takedowns against Alex Elder, one late in the first period and one in the last minute of the final period, to take the win.
Unfortunately, the Falcons were unable to win another bout, giving up falls in three of the last five matches. Two of those pins came from Oregon State's nationally ranked wrestlers, with No. 6 Colby Covington scoring a fall at 174 pounds and 12th-ranked Clayton Jack notching a pin in the heavyweight match.
The Falcons return to action Dec. 29-30, when head to Greensboro, N.C., for the annual Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC Greensboro.
