COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Following a stellar record-setting performance in the 800-meter run, Air Force senior Ally Romanko (Coos Bay, Ore.) was named the Mountain West Conference Athlete of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon (Feb. 16). It is the first weekly award for Romanko and the program's fifth such award this season.
With a career-best time of 2:06.91, Romanko crushed her own program standard in the 800-meter run on Saturday, Feb. 13, in the "invitational" field. The senior won her section and placed seventh overall (fifth among collegiate runners). Romanko's time crushed her previous program standard by more than three seconds. It is the second time this season that Romanko has upped her Academy record.
Her time, the fourth-fastest in the league, is ranked 21st in the country. In additional, Romanko provisionally qualified to the NCAA Championships with that time.
Romanko shared the conference's weekly honor with New Mexico's Lee Emanuel and Ashley Gibson. She becomes the third Air Force athlete to earn the MWC Athlete of the Week award during the indoor season. Romanko and classmates Nick Frawley and Sara Neubauer have combined for five individual weekly awards - the best total in indoor history.
The Falcons head to Laramie, Wyo., for the annual Robert Shine Invitational on Friday, Feb. 19. The meet will serve as a final tune-up for the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, which begin on Thursday, Feb. 25, in Albuquerque, N.M.
