PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. -
Senior Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) notched his first win of the season to lead the Air Force golf team at the Triumph at Pauma Valley, hosted by San Francisco at the par-71, 7,077-yard Pauma Valley Country Club. The Falcons, who shot a three-round score of 917 (+65), placed fifth in the team standings.
Whitney, who entered the final round tied for first place in the individual standings, was the only golfer in the field to shoot below par on Tuesday. With a tournament-low score of 68 in the final round, Whitney finished at 211 (-2), four strokes ahead of runner-up Steven Lecuyer of Central Arkansas.
With his win, Whitney now holds the Academy record for most top-three finishes in a career with 10. While it is his first victory of the season, he has now placed in the top three five times this year and in the top 10 seven times (in nine tournaments).
Freshman Andrew Hoops (Highland, Calif.) registered one of his best showings of the year, placing tied for 11th place at 225 (+12), while Kyle Bailey (Jr., Austin, Texas) finished tied for 33rd place at 235. Also competing for the Falcons were sophomore Caleb Leestma (So., Seabrook, Texas), who finished tied for 56th place at 246, and Travis Deckert (Wichita, Kan.), who placed 66th with a score of 253.
Winning the team title was Central Arkansas, which finished five strokes ahead of host San Francisco with a three-round score of 889 (+37).
The Falcons return to action next week, March 25-26, at the Barona Collegiate Cup, hosted by San Diego State.
