Falcons Lose to UNM, 6-1, in Regular Season Finale

The Air Force men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to New Mexico Saturday in the final regular season match for both teams. Senior Brett Rodgers posted the lone victory for Air Force, winning the No. 4 singles match in his final contest at the Academy. With the victory, UNM improved to 8-11 overall and 3-3 in the Mountain West Conference, while the Falcons fell to 10-12 overall and finished 0-6 in league play.

The Lobos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead wins at all three doubles spots. The Lobos' No. 3 duo of Carl Ho and Joe Wood were off first after posting an 8-5 victory over junior Alex Beaussart and Sam Barnes. UNM clinched the point when Ben Dunbar and Conor Berg won the No. 2 match, 8-4, over senior Austin Francis and freshman Lance Wilhelm. Rodgers and junior Taylor Soster produced the best doubles match before falling to Jadon Phillips and Phil Anderson, 8-6, at the No. 1 spot.

Rodgers got some revenge in singles play, however, rallying from a set down and saving two match points in the second-set tiebreak to defeat Anderson, 4-6, 7-6(6), (10-6) to post his first career singles win against a conference opponent. Unfortunately, the Lobos had already wrapped up the team match and won the other five singles matches in straight sets.

Francis played well in his final match at the Academy but fell to Dunbar, 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. Phillips cruised past Wilhelm, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot and Ho downed Soster, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 3. Berg beat Barnes at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1 and Wood completed the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Beaussart at the No. 6 spot.

Air Force travels to Las Vegas, Nev., next week for the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championships. The Falcons will be the seventh-seed and will face No. 2-seed San Diego State in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, April 28.
