Tom Whitney Named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar

NORMAN, Okla. - Air Force golfer Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) has been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar for the 2009-10 season, as announced by the GCAA (Golf Coaches Association of America) on Thursday. Whitney, who also received the honor in 2008-09, becomes the Falcons' first two-time recipient of the award.
A total of 119 players in Division I, 55 in Division II and four in NAIA earned the honor. Additionally, 22 honorees were added to the previously released Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70 percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II and NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 in Division I, II and III and 3.5 in NAIA. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Whitney, the Falcons' MVP in 2010, graduated from the Academy in May with a 3.29 GPA in social sciences. A two-time all-conference performer and two-time academic all-conference honoree, Whitney closed out his career at Air Force as one of the most decorated golfers in school history. He holds numerous school records, including lowest individual round (64) and lowest tournament score (200). His season stroke average of 71.7 during the 2009-10 season was also a school record, besting his own previous record of 72.0. Whitney, a two-time NCAA Regional participant, was also a finalist for the prestigious Byron Nelson Award.
