LA JOLLA, Calif. -
Playing a pair of conference match-ups to open the 2010 season, the 19th-ranked Air Force water polo team went 1-1 on the first day of the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego. The Falcons dropped an 11-6 decision to the 11th-ranked host Tritons, before posting a 13-6 victory over La Verne.
In the first game of the day, the Tritons outscored the Falcons 6-2 in the second half to capture an 11-6 victory. Leading the way for UC San Diego was Ryan Allred with four goals, while senior captain Bobby Geiger (Buellton, Calif.) led Air Force with two goals.
UC San Diego scored the first three goals of the game before sophomore Cruz Smithson (Capistrano Beach, Calif.) put the Falcons on the board with 1:29 on the clock in the first period. Another Triton score put UCSD up 4-1 going into the second quarter.
Air Force scored three unanswered goals in the second period, with Kurt Lemmen (Sr., Orlando, Fla.), Josh Stedman (Fr., Brea, Calif.) and Taque Patino (Jr., Rockford, Mich.) all getting on the board, as the Falcons tied the score at 4-4. However, the Tritons closed out the half with another goal to regain the advantage going into the intermission. UCSD never relinquished its lead, as Geiger scored the only Air Force goals of the second half.
The Falcons closed out the day with a contest versus La Verne. Air Force opened the game with a 2-0 advantage after one period, including the first career goal from sophomore Alex Arcidiacono (La Jolla, Calif.), and never looked back. The Falcons took a 6-1 margin into the halftime break, and while La Verne cut into their deficit in the third period, Air Force used a five-goal fourth quarter to ice the 13-6 victory.
Arcidiacono, playing in front of his hometown crowd, paced the Falcons against the Leopards with four goals. Geiger and Lemmen each added two goals in the game, while Stedman, Matt Versage (Sr., Merced, Calif.), Dillon Fisher (So., Orange, Calif.), Kurt Wallin (Sr., Temecula, Calif.) and Garrett Womack (So., Redlands, Calif.) each pitched in a goal.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow for the conclusion of the Triton Invitational. Air Force will face sixth-ranked conference rival Loyola Marymount at 9:00 a.m. (PT), followed by a meeting with No. 10 Pacific at 2:15 p.m.
