Air Force Wraps Up Competition at Lone Star Duals

The Air Force wrestling team posted a 3-1 record at the Lone Star Duals on Saturday, defeating Brown, Arizona State and Wayland Baptist, while falling to No. 19 American.
In its first match-up of the day, Air Force (5-2) won seven of nine contested bouts and picked up a forfeit win to earn a 36-6 victory over Brown. The Bears took an early 3-0 lead with a win at 125 pounds, but wins in the next three weight classes put Air Force ahead 10-3. After another Brown victory at 157 pounds, the Falcons closed out the match with five straight wins, including falls by Josh Mohr (So., Pewaukee, Wis.) and Jared Erickson (So., Newton, Utah) at 184 and 285 pounds, respectively.
Leading the other winners for Air Force were senior Joseph Stafford (Loomis, Calif.), who earned a 17-2 technical fall at 157 pounds, and 10th-ranked Cole VonOhlen (So., Jackson, Minn.), who picked up a 9-1 major decision at 141 pounds. In addition, Derek Gillespie (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.), Josh Kreimier (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.) and Clayton Gable (So., Dallastown, Pa.) won decisions at 133, 149 and 165 pounds, respectively, while Neil Delaney (Sr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) was credited with a forfeit victory at 197 pounds.
Against Arizona State, ranked eighth in the latest Intermat poll, the Falcons won three individual bouts and added a pair of forfeit victories to pull off the 26-23 win. Gillespie gave Air Force its first win of the dual meet, a 9-3 decision at 133 pounds, while VonOhlen scored a technical fall at 141 pounds. Kreimier added a fall in the 149-pound match, as the Falcons grabbed a 14-5 advantage in the team scoring. With forfeit victories at 157 and 197 pounds, Air Force was able to hold on for the team win, despite four more individual wins by the Sun Devils.
In its third dual of the day, Air Force rolled to a 55-0 victory over Wayland Baptist, scoring seven falls in nine contested bouts. Senior Andrew Zwirlein (Nashotah, Wis.) opened the match with a 14-6 major decision at 125 pounds, while Tyler Untrauer (Jr., Midwest City, Okla.), VonOhlen, Kreimier, Williams, Gable and Stafford followed with consecutive pins. Kazden Ikehara (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) notched a 7-4 decision at 184 pounds, while Erickson closed out the match with a fall in the heavyweight bout, following a WBU forfeit at 197.
The Falcons closed out the day with a close 23-17 loss to 19th-ranked American. The Eagles, who are also ranked eighth in the nation by Intermat, won the first two weight classes before VonOhlen put Air Force on the board with a dominating 19-3 technical fall over No. 15 Matt Mariacher. Gable added a win at 165 pounds, pulling out a 6-5 decision, while Mohr registered a 13-8 decision at 184 pounds. In addition, Erickson picked up six team points with a forfeit victory at heavyweight.
Also on Saturday, the Falcons sent another group of wrestlers to the Borah Duals, where they faced CSU-Pueblo, Western State and Mesa State. Air Force picked up an 18-17 win over CSU-Pueblo, while falling to host Western State, 36-7, and Mesa State, 34-12.
In the dual between Air Force and CSU-Pueblo, both teams earned a technical fall and four decisions, but the Falcons were awarded a team penalty point to capture the team victory. Sophomore Tyler Spangler (Midlothian, Va.) led the way for Air Force, recording a technical fall in his first action of the season, while freshmen Greg Rinker (Northampton, Pa.), Daniel Baucke (Memphis, Tenn.), Jarret Hoeppner (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Carter Adams (Coon Rapids, Minn.) each added wins at 125, 149, 165 and 174 pounds, respectively.
Air Force won just two matches against the host Mountaineers, who are currently rated fourth in the Division II team rankings. Baucke recorded a 10-2 major decision over WSC's Justin Keys, while Adams added a 9-7 decision over Cody Frankum. The Falcons also picked up a pair of individual wins against Mesa State, with Rinker and Garrett Manley (Fr., Toledo, Ohio) recording falls at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively.
Air Force returns to action next weekend, Jan. 21-22, when they head to the West Coast for three dual meets. The Falcons will visit Cal State Fullerton on Friday night, then take part in the Cal Baptist Duals on Saturday versus Cal Baptist and Menlo.
