Lance Wilhelm Wins Title at UNM Balloon Fiesta Classic

Junior Lance Wilhelm won the "A" singles flight and sophomore Alex Grubbs took the "B" singles flight title Sunday on the final day of the 2011 UNM Balloon Fiesta Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. Wilhelm defeated UNM's Ben Dunbar, 7-6, 6-3, while Grubbs downed Robin Chou of Arizona, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.
Wilhelm won three of his four matches at the tournament in straight sets, with his only three-setter coming on Saturday in the semifinals. Grubbs, meanwhile, won half of his four matches in straight sets.
In the doubles bracket, Wilhelm and freshman Grant Taylor downed Grubbs and freshman Landon Kinsey, 8-1, in the semifinals before falling to the New Mexico duo of Dunbar and James Hignett, 8-2, in the finals.
Sophomores Andy Jackson and Ali Rizvi lost in the consolation semifinals to Josh Brown and Rob Martin of Northern Arizona.
The Falcons return to action at the ITA Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
