Falcons Improve to 7-2 With Win Over Lamar

The Air Force men's tennis team improved to 7-2 this spring with a 5-2 victory over Lamar University Friday evening at the Academy. The Falcons swept the three doubles matches and won four of the six singles contests. With the loss, Lamar fell to 3-5.
The Falcons took an early 1-0 lead with wins at all three doubles spots. Sophomore Lance Wilhelm and freshman Andy Jackson won at No. 1, 8-4, over Denis Ermilov and Dusan Savkovic, while freshmen Lucas Marin-Salcedo and Steven Young beat Marton Horvath and Rob Lee, 8-5, at No. 2. Freshmen Alex Grubbs and Ali Rizvi completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Diego Snyder and Carlos Valdenebro at No. 3.
In singles, Wilhelm suffered his first loss of the spring after eight straight wins, falling at the No. 1 spot in three sets, 4-6, 7-6(7), 10-6 to Ermilov. The Falcons rebounded with wins at the Nos. 2-5 spots, led by Marin-Salcedo's 7-5, 6-3 win over Lee at No. 2. Jackson beat Valdenebro, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3, Grubbs downed Horvath, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4 and Young defeated Savkovic, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5. Snyder won the No. 6 match for Lamar, 6-4, 6-2 over AFA senior Alex Beaussart.
"We had a great week of practice and it showed on the court today," said Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous. "I loved the way our team competed."
The Falcons return to action on Sunday, March 6 against Weber State at the Academy. The match is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
