Falcons Blanked by Utah, 7-0

The University of Utah men's tennis team blanked Air Force Friday at the Liberty Park Tennis Center by a score of 7-0. The Utes improved to 7-12 and 1-3 in the Mountain West Conference, while the Falcons fell to 10-11 and 0-4 in league play. AFA's No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Lance Wilhelm and freshman Steven Young defeated Benito Suriano and Alejandro Medinilla, 8-3, for the Falcons' lone win of the day.
The Utes claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3. At the No. 3 position, Dmytro Mamedov and Devin Lane downed senior Taylor Soster and sophomore Sam Barnes, 8-3, while Gino Octa and Matt Cowley topped freshmen Andy Jackson and Alex Grubbs, 8-6, at the No. 2 spot.
In singles play, Utah won three matches in straight sets and three in three sets. Medinilla downed Young, 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot, putting the Utes up 2-0. Lane then extended the lead to 3-0, downing Soster, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 3 position.
Mamedov earned the match clinching point with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jackson at the No. 2 spot. After dropping his first set, 5-7, Ben Tasevac rallied for a win, defeating senior Alex Beaussart, 6-3, 10-3 in the second and third sets at the No. 6 slot, making the score 5-0.
Cowley then battled Grubbs at the No. 4 position, dropping the first set, 3-6, and coming back for a 6-1, 7-6(1) victory. Suriano completed the sweep with a thrilling 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 10-8 win over Wilhelm at the top spot.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday, April 16 against BYU in Provo. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
