The Wichita State men's tennis team handed Air Force its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, 4-3, at Genesis Health Club in Wichita, Kan. The Shockers improved to 2-1, while the Falcons fell to 3-1.
Air Force took a 1-0 lead to begin the match after they captured the doubles point. Sophomores Andy Jackson and Alex Grubbs defeated Tomislav Gregurovic and Erick Reyes, 8-5, at the No. 2 spot, while Sophomore Ali Rizvi and freshman Joey Brandt won the No. 3 match, 8-6, over Juan Estenssoro and Nestor Perez. Junior Lance Wilhelm and freshman Grant Taylor lost the No. 1 match, 8-2, to the nation's 20th-ranked team of David Cavalcanti and Matheus Pereira.
The Shockers stormed back in singles behind the strong play of Pereira and Cavalcanti in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, respectively. Pereira, ranked 66th in the country, defeated Wilhelm, 7-5, 6-2, while Cavalcanti cruised in his match against Jackson, 6-1, 6-0.
Air Force freshman Landon Kinsey pulled out a three-set win over Gregurovic, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, at the No. 3 spot, but Reyes and Estenssoro won the No. 4 and No. 5 matches to help the Shockers clinch the match. Sophomore Alex Lineberry won at No. 6 for the Falcons, defeating Kester Black, 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 (8).
"We played another very good match today," said Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous. "It's disappointing to lose a close match but we take a lot of positives out of this road trip. All our players got wins over the weekend, our doubles is showing improvement, and we won a couple of three-set battles."
