
Falcons split pair of games at Triton Invitational

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force split a pair of games at the annual Triton Invitational (hosted by UC San Diego) at the Canyonview Aquatics Center in La Jolla, Calif. In the season opener for both teams, the Falcons fell to fourth-ranked Cal, 19-10. The Falcons earned its first win of the season, later in the day, with a 13-8 win over Cal Lutheran.
In the first game, Air Force battled the fourth-ranked team in the nation to a close game for most of the contest. The Falcons trailed Cal just 11-8 at the half and 15-10 after three quarters. However, the Bears pulled away with four goals in the fourth quarter. Freshman Garrett Fisk led the Falcons with four goals while Jantz Johnson scored two. Oliver Carter, Riley Thomas, Dominic Vicino and Justin Harrison each scored one.
The Falcons improved to 1-1 on the season with a 13-8 win over Cal Lutheran in their second game of the day. The Falcons broke open a close game by outscoring the Kingsmen, 7-2, in the second half. Air Force opened up a 3-0 lead early in the game, but the Kingsmen came back to tie the game at 5-5 at the end of the first quarter. Each team scored once in the second quarter for a 6-6 tie at the half. Goals by Robby Stiefel and Ben Rogers in the third quarter gave the Falcons an 8-6 lead. Air Force dominated the fourth quarter, out-scoring the Kingsmen, 5-2, for the 13-8 victory. Stiefel scored two goals in the period and had three goals in the game. Johnson also scored three goals vs. the Kingsmen. Max Benson made three saves in the first two quarters. Caleb Guarino made seven saves in the final two quarters.
Air Force will continue action in the Triton Invitation on Sunday against Pacific at 10:40 am and Long Beach State at 3:05 pm PT at the Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla, Calif.
