NEW ORLEANS – The Air Force men's cross country team debuted in the national rankings this week, following a strong performance at the Washington Invitational last Friday. The Falcons, under the direction of second-year head coach Ryan Cole, entered the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's Division I National Coaches' Poll with a No. 29 ranking.
It is the first national mention of the season for the Falcons, who finished fifth in Seattle last week. Backed by a top-five finish from senior Patrick Corona and a top-15 placement from junior Kyle Eller, Air Force placed ahead of two teams receiving votes in the last USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll and recorded the highest finish of teams not (then) ranked in the national poll. In addition to being the first USTFCCCA mention of the year for the Falcons, it is the earliest Air Force been ranked since 2005, when that squad entered season listed in the top-30.
Air Force returns to action next Saturday (Oct. 17), when it travels to Louisville, Ky., for the annual Pre-Nationals Invitational. This year's meet will be held at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park – the site of the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
