COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force senior Joey Uhle was named the Mountain West Men's Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced this afternoon (June 17). Uhle, who shared the 2015 men's outdoor honor with New Mexico's Peter Callahan, is the first Air Force athlete to earn the conference's top track and field award.
During the outdoor season, the native of Powell, Ohio, successfully defended his conference title in the pole vault, clearing 16'11½". Uhle, who paced the Air Force vaulters to a 1-2-3 sweep of the medals for the third straight conference championship meet (2014 outdoor, 2015 indoor, 2015 outdoor), picked up an additional first-place finish at the Aztec Invitational (17'5"), en route to MW Field Athlete of the Week honors, and finished within the top five at three other meets. The outdoor season followed a stellar indoor campaign that saw Uhle clear an Academy-record 18'2½" (the second-best clearance in MW history), claim his third consecutive MW indoor title and advance to the NCAA Championships for the third time in four years.
Uhle is just the fourth Air Force athlete in any sport to earn a "voted-on" player of the year award from the Mountain West, joining football's Will Conant (2014 special teams player of the year), basketball's Tim Anderson (2008 defensive player of the year) and basketball's Nick Welch (2004 co-player of the year). In addition, Isaiah Bragg was named the 2013 men's cross country student-athlete of the year by virtue of winning the conference championship.
The MW Student-Athlete of the Year award recognizes the outstanding male and female athletes in track and field. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by the head coaches at each member institution. Utah State's Chari Hawkins earned the 2015 honor for the women.
