AIR FORCE WOMEN CONCLUDE THE NICK TOTH OPEN

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - The Air Force fencing team was host to the Nick Toth Open, Sept. 19-20, at the Cadet Gymnasium. On Saturday, the Air Force men had several top finishes in both the senior and junior tournaments. The event concluded on Sunday, Sept. 20, with the women's senior and junior tournaments. The women's competition fielded a smaller group of fencers then the men's competitions. Several of the Falcons' returning fencers along with the freshmen class competed in the days' events.
On Sunday, sophomore Nicole Quattrociocchi was the senior women's foil champion, and claimed the No. 2 spot in the juniors. Junior Waverly Hock was the runner up in the junior event. In senior saber, freshman Lauren Sides placed second after advancing 15-11 and 15-12 to the finals, losing the championship bout to a fencer from Denver, 11-15. Sides, who was 6-1 in pools, also tied for third place in the junior event. In senior epee, juniors Schaeffer McHenry and Virginia Long finished 17th and 26th, respectively.
On Saturday, in junior men's epee event, freshman Cameron Sullivan was the championship winner. Sullivan also tied for third place in the senior tournament. Sophomore Nathan Lee, earning his B15 rating in the USFA, was the runner-up. Senior James Salem won the senior epee championship title; he also earned his A15 rating. Freshman Nicholas Pollack was the third-place winner in senior foil.
Also fencing in senior epee, were juniors Alexander Elwers, who took the No. 6 spot, and Elias Johnson who finished in 11th place, followed by Lee who was 17th and senior Robert Chado who finished 20th.
Rounding out the Falcons' opening weekend, senior Matthew Bergstedt, and junior Ryan Andrieux were the only Falcons to fence in the senior men's saber tournament. Bergstedt finished in eighth place while Andrieux finished ninth.
The fencers have a break in competition until Oct. 3-4 when the team travels to Amarillo, Texas, for the Amarillo Open. Following Amarillo, members of the men's and women's squads will compete in the first North American Cup of the season in Richmond, Va., Oct. 9-12. On Oct. 31-Nov. 1, the Falcon Open returns to the Academy at the Cadet Gymnasium.
