NEW ORLEANS – Four members of the Air Force cross country team earned all-region honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this evening, as the USTFCCCA recognized the 450 runners from across the country (225 women, 225 men) that finished within the top 25 of the nine regional meets that were contested earlier this afternoon.
The women, who posted the best team finish in Academy history (third), claimed a program-record three all-region honors. Junior Carina Gillespie and sophomore Jaci Smith placed third and fourth, respectively in the 135-runner 6K event, while senior Lindy Long earned a 19th-place finish. Gillespie, who finished 21st at last year's meet, became just the third runner in Air Force women's history to capture all-region honors in multiple years. It was the first regional award for both Smith and Long.
Junior Andrew Johnston represented Air Force on the men's all-region team, as he finished 14th out of 113 competitors in the 10K race. Johnston's first all-region accolade marked the 15th time in 17 years that the Falcons have been represented among the top-25 of the Mountain Region.
The Falcons' four all-region selections are tied for the most in a single season (2003, 2015).
