Falcon Wrestling Concludes Weekend Tournaments with Multiple Placewinners

U.S. Air Force Academy -- Team captain Jerry McGinty registered four decision victories and a fall en route to a runner-up finish in the Wolfpack Open, Sunday in NC State's Carmichael Gym. The Falcons saw four place-winning finishes on the event with McGinty, Parker Hines, Alex Lopouchanski and Drew Romero all finishing in the top-eight of their respective weight classes.
Four decision wins and a fall (1:15) over Lehigh's John Mele in the semi-finals propelled McGinty to the 149 class title bout against Andrew Crone of Wisconsin. All of McGinty's decision wins leading up to the finals came in a margin of three points or more. In the championship bout, Crone spent a majority of the match logging riding time while fending off McGinty's attack. The Colorado Springs native went 5-1 on the tournament.
Team captain Parker Hines registered a sixth place finish in the 197 class, going 4-2 on the tournament. The Ellsworth, Wis., native opened his tournament slate with a fall (6:23) and a major decision before dropping a match to NC State's Malik McDonald in the quarter-finals. Hines bounced back with another major decision and decision victory en route to the fifth place match, where he dropped a 5-0 decision to Jeric Kasunic of American University.
Sophomore 165-pounder Alex Lopouchanski opened up his tournament slate with a decision and a major decision to land a quarter-finals bout with 2016 NCAA runner-up Isaac Jordan of Wisconsin; Jordan is the second-ranked 165-pounder in the nation. The Badger registered an 8-1 decision over Lopouchanski. In the consolation bracket, the Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native logged two more decision wins to land a spot in the fifth place bout where he came up short, 5-2, to Old Dominion's 165-pounder.
NCAA qualifier Drew Romero registered two decisions wins to earn a bout in the quarter-finals round of the championship bracket. A tough loss sent Romero to the consolation bracket where he logged his third decision victory of the day over teammate Alec Opsal. In the seventh place bout Romero dropped a decision loss.
Dylan Hyder and Tyler Wiederolt each registered three wins, while Michael Billingsley, Josh Giorgio, Anthony McLaughlin, Randy Meneweather, Alex Mossing, Garrett O'Shea, Alec Opsal, Ricky Padilla, Dane Robbins and John Twomey all logged two wins apiece.
Air Force also registered four place winners in the UNK-Holiday Inn Open over the weekend. Senior 125-pounder Cassidy Oshiro led the second contingency of Falcons with a fourth place finish in the tournament's elite division. Oshiro went 2-2 on the day.
Sam Kreimier and Robert Walker checked in at sixth place in their respective weight classes; also in the elite division. Kreimier went 4-3 en route to his finish, while Walker went 3-2.
In the amateur division, Adam Pelter finished fourth in the 157 class; he went 3-2 on the event. Jake Kurzhals, Colt Stowe and Bryce Town also registered two wins apiece in the amateur division.
Air Force will see a small break in action over the Thanksgiving break. On December 2-3, the Falcons will compete in the prestigious 35th-annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in the Las Vegas Convention Center. Both days of tournament action kick off at 9:00 a.m. PT. The Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite is considered by many to be the most competitive regular-season tournament in the nation. FloWrestling will provide live stream coverage of the event.
