The Air Force athletics physical education program is hosting the Defense Advanced Research Projects (DARPA) Tactical Social Interaction (TSI) program November 6-10 at the Academy and in surrounding areas of Colorado Springs.
The DARPA strategic social interaction module program is designed to maximize the warfighter’s ability to successfully manage high-risk, high-consequence social interactions on unfamiliar human terrain. The vision of the program is to develop novel ways to teach warfighters the core human dynamics proficiencies that are necessary for successful completion of a full spectrum of military tasks in which social interaction is a critical element, both in kinetic and non-kinetic environments.
Some of the positive outcomes of applying these proficiencies include de-escalation of conflict, reduction of unnecessary use of force, reduced mutual perceptions of humiliation and disrespect, increased flow of actionable information and intelligence, correction of errors and misperceptions, increased mutual perceptions of trust and respect and enhanced cooperation with host nation allied forces and civilian populations.
The department is currently re-writing the course curriculum for PE 215 and part of the process is the development of awareness and capability of cadets and future officers to detect dangerous situations prior to conflict. The DARPA program provides a non-service specific approach to the problem set and will be beneficial for the course.
There will be 18 members at the Academy for the program, including PE instructors, Air Force Special Operations Command, members of the 10th Special Forces Airborne Group and local law enforcement members from the Colorado Springs Police Department. The program will be taught by four members from Fairchild Air Force Base and Spokane County Sheriff’s Department.
