
Falcons in second place in WAC Championships after day two

HOUSTON, Texas - Another individual title and more school records highlight the Falcons' second day of the Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, Thursday, Feb. 23, in Houston, Texas.
For the second night in a row, Air Force claimed gold. Senior Andrew Faciszewski won the 500 free with a time of 4:23.62. Swimming with Faciszewski in finals, Ben Brockman claimed fourth (4:26.54) and Garrett Glaudini took sixth (4:26.74). Collin Green swam to a 13th-place finish in 4:29.10.
"It was great that we could hang on to the 500 free title," said head coach Rob Clayton, "Andrew swam a great race. They went stroke for stroke the whole way, and then Andrew willed himself to the victory."
The Falcons also had three swimmers score in the 200 IM. Qualifying for consolation finals, Kevin Fanter placed 11th in 1:49.84, Derek Brecht took 13th place with a 1:50.49, and Kevin Pollard was 14th in 1:50.54. Freshman Kyle Bundesmann returned for "C" finals and bested his time from prelims by swimming a 1:52.51.
In the 50 freestyle, the Air Force sprinters raced to set another school record. Between the prelims and finals, Steffen Mount and Jordan Dahle broke the school record of 19.97 three times and tied it once. New ownership goes to Steffen Mount who swam 19.81 in prelims and 19.86 in finals for a seventh-place finish. Jordan Dahle swam 19.93 in prelims and again, tied the previous school record with a 19.97 in finals for an eighth-place finish. Michael Hannigan bested his time for an 11th-place finish in 20.10 and Lars Knutson was 14th in 20.33.
The divers competed in the 3-meter springboard with A.J. Eckebrecht taking sixth place in finals with a 281.40. Earning their standings from morning performances, Nicholas Piontek came in 10th (275.05), Erich Drollinger was 13th (248.70), and Kevin LeCours took 14th (239.30).
Wrapping up the night, the Falcon sprinting crew of Mount, Knutson, Hannigan and Dahle returned for a third-place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:19.19.
The Falcons currently sit in second place, 18 points behind Wyoming who hold the lead with 285 points. Air Force is second with 267, and Grand Canyon is third with 242. According to Coach Clayton, "We are within striking distance. Tomorrow is a great day for us."
Day 3 of the WAC Championships resumes on Friday, Feb. 24, with the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley relay. Prelims start at 10:30 am and finals at 6 pm. The Falcon divers get a day off from competition and will return to dive platform on Saturday.
