NEW ORLEANS – Highlighted by a first-team award from junior Shelley Spires, three members of the Air Force track and field team earned All-America honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association today (March 13), as the USTFCCCA announced its Division I list of All-Americans. The three indoor selections are the second-most in program history.
Spires earned First-Team All-America status in the high jump after finishing sixth in that event at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships, which were held this past weekend in College Station, Texas. The junior cleared 6'0½" to become the first female DI All-American in the high jump (indoor or outdoor) and just the second Air Force female to garner All-America accolades in any indoor event.
Senior Kyle Pater and junior Jamiel Trimble earned Second-Team All-America honors last weekend. Pater placed 13th in the pole vault finals with a clearance of 17'6½", while Trimble finished 10th in the semifinals of the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.84. Pater is the sixth Air Force pole vaulter to claim All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships (nine total occurrences), while Trimble garnered All-America status in the 200-meter dash for the second straight year (16th in 2016).
In all, more than 500 athletes were awarded All-American status at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships. Any athlete that claimed a scoring finish (a share of first through eighth) was awarded first-team status, while those placing ninth through 16th were named second-team selections.
