U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - No. 1 ranked California defeated Air Force, 24-7, in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Invitational water polo tournament, Friday, Sept. 22, in Los Angeles, Calif.
Air Force senior Garrett Fisk scored the first goal of the game to put the Falcons up 1-0 at 6:33 of the first quarter. Cal then netted the next five goals before Luke Andres scored with 12 seconds left in the first quarter. The Bears scored the next three for a 9-2 lead, but Falcon senior Jack Empey scored with 3:49 left in the first half. Cal added one more to take a 10-3 lead into the half. Falcon sophomore Mike Miller and Fisk each scored in the third quarter, but Air Force trailed 18-3. Riley Thomas scored midway through the fourth and Edward Smet added one with three seconds left to make up the final margin.
Air Force will face UC Davis on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 8 am PT at the Burns Recreation Center in Los Angeles. If the Falcons win, they will play again on Saturday at 2:40 pm PT. If the Falcons lose to the Aggies, Air Force will play at 1:20 pm on Saturday.
