Air Force has best-ever season opener with a school record

Ranked No. 2 in the Collegiate Polls
U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. – The Air Force rifle team opened the season with a triangular match against Patriot Rifle Conference opponents Nevada and UTEP this past weekend, Oct. 13-14, at the Falcon Rifle Range. On Saturday, the Falcons swept the tri-match with a 4702 against the Wolfpack (4594) and Miners (4589). The following day, the Falcons soared past the Miners, winning the shoulder-to-shoulder match with a school record 4714-4561. The weekend results sent the Falcons to No. 2, ranked between No. 1 Kentucky, the 2018 national champions, and No. 3 West Virginia in the College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) polls.
On Saturday, the Falcons shot a 2328 in smallbore and finished with a 2374 in the air rifle. Senior Spencer Cap was the leader with a career best 1181. Cap led in both guns, with a 596 in air rifle, scoring a 300 in his first 30 shots, and a 585 in the smallbore.
Junior Logan Ogden followed with an 1176, scoring 593 points in the air rifle, shooting a 200 in his first 20 shots, and 583 in smallbore. Freshman Peter Fiori, followed Cap and Ogden with an 1171, shooting 577 in smallbore and 594 in air rifle. Senior Anna Weilbacher tied with Ogden in the smallbore with a 583. She scored a 587 in air rifle and finished the day with an 1170.
Wrapping up the weekend, the Falcons shot shoulder-to-shoulder with UTEP to close out the first home series of the season. Air Force swept the Miners 4714-4561. The air rifle squad finished with a 2377, three points higher than on Saturday, while the smallbore team outscored themselves by nine points and finished with 2337 points.
Ogden was the leading scorer with a career high 1183 scoring a career best 589 in smallbore, with a perfect 100 in his first 10 shots for standing. In air rifle, he had a best season opener score of 594, hitting his first 10 shots and again in his fourth series. Ogden's aggregate score was the third-highest collegiate score of the weekend.
Senior Anna Weilbacher also had a good day, compiling 1179 points with a 586 in smallbore, scoring 200 in the prone. She went on to finish with a 593 in air rifle.
Making their debut this weekend were freshmen Casper Schadler and Fiori. Both cadet-athletes had the overall highest air rifle scores against the Miners with 596s. Fiori had a 585 in the smallbore (1181), and tied Cap's previous day's scores in both guns and aggregate. Schadler had a 576 (1172). The Falcons top shooters all shot in the 590s against the Miners.
Air Force will close out the month of October with another triangular against No. 3 West Virginia and No. 9 Nebraska in Morgantown, WV, on Oct. 21.
