Air Force fencing competed against some of the nation's top fencing programs at the 2019 Penn Elite Invitational, held Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa.
Both teams went 1-4 in head-to-head competition. The men's team earned a 17-10 victory over North Carolina and suffered defeats against Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Penn and Yale. The women's team earned a 15-12 win over Johns Hopkins and had setbacks against North Carolina, Harvard, Temple, and NJIT.
The men's team was led by freshman Matthew Han, junior Calvin Smith and sophomore Nestor Levin. Han and Smith led the way in the men's epee, as Han went 9-2 and Smith went 8-5 in head-to-head bouts. Levin led the foil group with a 9-6 record.
On the women's side, senior Leanne Singleton-Comfort, junior Nicole Agob and junior Kaitlyn Guo led the way. Singleton-Comfort went 13-2 in the women's saber, which included perfect 3-0 runs in four of five matches. Guo led the foil group, going 10-5. Agob led the epee group, going 9-6.
"My first NCAA experience with the entire team as a head coach was amazing!," head coach Omar Elgeziry said. "Lots of positive notes and many challenges to overcome but I see us getting out of the transition period very soon. The UPenn Invite is one of the strongest NCAA meets in the season. All the big colleges were there and we did fence many junior world team member fencers and we beat some of them! It certainly was great exposure for the cadets to fence the stronger colleges. We've learned a lot of things and it's now time to go back to the Academy to work hard and prepare for the next step. Go Falcons!"
Air Force fencing returns to action at the Div. I & lI NAC, from Dec. 6-9, in Salt Lake City.
