Air Force had another podium finish, a re-set school record, and had five more times within the top-10 in program history.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Air Force Academy women's swimming and diving team concluded the 2019 Mountain West Championships with a strong finish Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Freeman Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Falcons had another podium finish, a re-set school record, and five more times within the top-10 in program history.
Sophomore Kylie Stronko once again made history for the Falcons in the backstroke, as she re-broke her 200 back record with a prelim time of 1:57.40, surpassing her previous time of 1:58.43. In the finals, Stronko took eighth place with a 2:00.06. Also in the 200 back, senior Emma Strom raced to a 1:59.14 in the C final, which is now the second-fastest in the Academy history.
Air Force's most successful overall event was the 200 breast, as they had three finishers score points in the finals. Junior Heidi Schellin continued her strong weekend as she won the B final, placing ninth, with a 2:14.53. That time is the second-quickest in program history, and missed out on tying the school record by .01 seconds. The freshmen duo of Evelyn Johnson and Caroline Wittich finished 17th and 19, respectively, while Johnson moved up the Academy top-10 list to sixth with a 2:17.55.
In the opening event of the final day, the 1650 freestyle, senior Elisabeth Brechbuhl grinded her way to a 17th place finish with a 17:06.51, which upped her Academy top-10 time to eighth fastest all-time.
Over in the 200 fly, freshman Dia Gawronski was the top placer for Air Force, taking 22nd with a 2:05.21, the fastest for any Falcon this season. As for the 100 free, AF did not qualify anyone for the finals, but senior Jessica Chen swam the fastest time with a 52.51, the second fastest for the team on the season.
In the final swimming event of the championships, the 400 free relay, Air Force placed 10th with a 3:28.30, the fastest time in the event for the team this season.
On the diving board, the Falcons competed in the platform dive. Air Force had a pair score points, as juniors Eve Fowler and Kayla Wofford both finished season-best scores. Fowler placed 17th with a 206.50, while Wofford was 21st with a 198.60.
As a team, the Falcons placed 10th with a team score of 409. The greatest amount of success came individually, as there were two new school records from Stronko in both backstroke events, while 14 swims found their way into the top-10 in program history. Fowler also had a NCAA Zone qualifying score on the 1-meter dive.
