Senior Alex Mossing will reach the podium for the third straight season
TULSA, Okla. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team wrapped up day one of competition at the 2019 Big 12 Championships Saturday evening, March 9, at the BOK Center. Air Force has three wrestlers remaining in competition after a full day of wrestling.
Senior co-captain Alex Mossing is the lone Falcon remaining in the consolation rounds, as he went 3-1 today at 157 lbs. to get to the consolation semifinals. He is guaranteed at least a sixth place finish, marking the third straight season he will land on the podium.
Meanwhile, junior Garrett O'Shea and senior Anthony McLaughlin are still alive in a seventh place match to try and earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships. McLaughlin is just one win away, as if he takes seventh he gets the auto bid. O'Shea needs to win his seventh place match, and if he does he may get a chance to wrestle for a true sixth place seed.
As a team, AF notched six wins, and have totaled 11.5 points to sit in 12th place heading into day two.
Mossing, seeded seventh at 157, was the lone Falcon to win his prelim match, getting to the quarterfinals. He defeated Jordan Robison of Northern Colorado by major decision. In the quarters, Mossing was just edged out by two seeded Jacob Wright, 5-2, to fall into the consolation round.
In the first consolation match, Mossing picked up the pace, racing to a 21-6 tech fall over Grant LaMont of Utah Valley. Then in his second consolation, Mossing jumped ahead early with some back points, and didn't look back in a 10-4 decision over sixth seeded Dewey Krueger of Wyoming.
While Mossing can't earn an automatic bid, as 157 has one slot, Mossing will go for as high as third place in the consolation rounds tomorrow. His day begins with the consi semis against number five seeded Luke Weber of North Dakota State.
As for O'Shea and McLaughlin, after dropping their prelim matches, both rebounded in the first round of consolations with wins. O'Shea defeated Chris DeLoza of Fresno State, 4-2, while McLaughlin won in an overtime epic against eighth seeded Cale Davidson of Wyoming. In a bout that went all the way to tiebreaker two, McLaughlin got a crucial stall call in the final 30 seconds to take a marathon match, 4-3, and remain alive.
Both then fell in the second round of consolations, but both will have something big to wrestle for tomorrow, a spot in the 2019 NCAA Championships. O'Shea will face sixth seeded Sam Turner of Wyoming, while McLaughlin gets a rematch with seventh seeded Jacob Seeley of UNC, who he just defeated in the final dual of the season a couple weeks ago.
The final victory on the day came from sophomore Jacoby Ward, as he knocked off fourth seeded Nick Kiussis of West Virginia at 165 in the first round of consolations. Ward was then one win away from an auto bid, including leading early against Logan Schumacher of Iowa State, but he eventually was felled to fall just short of the podium.
Day two of the Big 12 Championships continues tomorrow, March 10, with the final consolation rounds beginning at 12 p.m. CT. The third session, where Air Force wrestlers will contest their final matches, runs from 12-2 p.m CT.
