Air Force men's tennis earned a pair of Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Awards, announced today by the ITA office. Senior Isaac Perez won the Arthur Ashe Leadership/Sportsmanship Award for the Mountain Region and the team won the Mountain Region Community Service Award.
Perez, the team captain, recently completed his four years with men's tennis with 80 career wins. He is a two-time recipient of the Air Force Men's Tennis Coach Gugat "Attitude is Everything" Award. Off the court, Perez was active at the Academy as the wing staff public affairs officer. During the summer prior to his senior year, Perez was the vice commander of the Air Force Summer Sports Camps. The San Antonio, Texas, native is slated to attend undergraduate pilot training upon graduation.
"Isaac had a tennis career like few others at the Air Force Academy and led our team with the character of a champion," head coach Dan Oosterhous said. "Isaac was a role-model for my team the day he stepped on our courts and has always displayed the utmost respect and sportsmanship while representing the Academy."
The Falcons as a team were also awarded the 2019 Mountain Region Community Service Award. Air Force was active in the community all season long. Highlights of their service included:
Special Olympics Tennis Tournament - The Air Force men's tennis team served as volunteers at the Colorado State Games in Colorado Springs for the tennis competition. The team assisted the Special Olympic tennis athletes in scorekeeping, officiating, and ball-keeping, helping to promote an exciting and memorable atmosphere for the athletes.
Warrior Games wheelchair tennis clinic - The Air Force men's tennis team assisted in the wheelchair tennis clinic held for wounded veterans and their family members for the 2018 Warrior Games hosted at the Air Force Academy. The Warrior Games is a para-olympic-style athletic competition for injured service-members from the USA and four other nations. Wheelchair tennis is a new sport being introduced to the Games and my team volunteered as instructors during the clinic.
Ft. Carson Wounded Soldier Battalion - Air Force men's tennis coach Dan Oosterhous donates time giving wheelchair tennis clinics/lessons to wounded soldiers at the local Army base, Ft Carson. These soldiers are recovering from injuries and using adaptive sports as a critical piece of their rehabilitation.
Air Force recently completed the 2018-19 season with a 12-13 record, its winningest season since 2014.
