The United States Air Force Academy recently had six programs recognized by NCAA President Mark Emmert for academic excellence. Air Force football, fencing, wrestling, men's tennis, women's tennis and women's gymnastics all distinguished themselves in the classroom amongst their peers. The honor is bestowed annually on teams with an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all programs in their respective sports.
"This is tremendous honor for the United States Air Force Academy to have so many teams recognized this year, Air Force Director of Athletics Nathan Pine said. "It is a testament to the hard work of our cadet-athletes in the classroom and the care and dedication of our teammates on the faculty who make this possible. Our cadets are the true embodiment of student-athletes and I could not be more proud of their achievements."
Each year, the NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship (recruited and on varsity roster for non-scholarship schools). The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
