Air Force Fencing Dominates Falcon Open

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force fencing had several strong performances at the 2019 Falcon Open Sat.-Sun., Sept 14-15. The Falcons took first place in seven events over the two-day competition at the Cadet Gymnasium Center Gym.
Seven different Falcons won events over the weekend, including four events by three freshmen.
On the senior side, Air Force took first in five events. Freshman Matthew Han led three top 10 finishes in the men's epee, with a first-place finish. Junior Matt Goode took first in the senior men's saber with three Falcons placing in the top 10. Freshman Jose McGoff-Medero won a loaded senior men's foil group, as Air Force took five of the top seven spots.
Junior Kaityln Guo won the senior women's foil, as the Falcons took three of the top six spots. Senior Helen Landwehr won the senior women's epee.
In juniors competition, Levin won the junior mixed foil, as Air Force dominated with by taking the top four spots. The freshmen trio of Brian Park, Luke Kinney and McGoff-Medero followed in second, third and fourth.
Sophomore Erin Shea won the junior women's saber. Shea also placed second in the senior women's saber.
In junior men's epee action, sophomore Zack Yung was the top Falcon finisher, placing third. In junior men's saber sophomore Owen Possick was the top finisher in seventh.
The Falcon Open was also the head coaching debut for Omar Elgeziry, who took over the helm of Air Force Fencing in place of recently retired Abdel Salem.
"Although we had a short period to prepare for the tournament, we managed to win all the individual senior events except women's saber, where we were hampered by an injury to our top saber competitor," Elgeziry said. "We had remarkable freshman performances from Matthew Han and Jose (Ignacio) McGoff-Medero to win the men's epee and men's foil. This is a good start to kick off the season!"
Air Force returns to action Oct. 18-21 at the Div. I/II NAC's in Kansas City, Mo.
