The Falcons fell one point shy of taking first as a team
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team wrapped up action at the 2020 All Academy Championships, Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25, inside the East Gym. The team score came down to the final bout, but in the end AF finished one point shy of first place, taking second place for the second consecutive year.
The Naval Academy took first with 117.5 points, while AF had 116.5. VMI rounded out the top three with 48, followed by the Coast Guard (47.5), The Citadel (34), Merchant Marine (18.5), and Norwich (12.5).
Air Force had all 10 wrestlers finish in the top three of their respective weight classes, including three individual champions. The weight class winners for the Falcons were freshman Dylan Martinez at 149 lbs., sophomore Trey Brisker at 157 lbs., and senior Randy Meneweather at 165 lbs. AF then had five wrestlers place runner-up, and two more finish third.
Brisker had the toughest route to the championship for the Falcons, as he had a quarterfinals match. He won that by major decision, and then won by 4-2 decision in the semis. In the finals, Brisker ended out his opponent from Navy, 2-0, to claim the crown.
Martinez began his day with a bye to advance to the semis. There, he took a 5-3 decision over Wyatt Long of Navy to reach the finals. In the finals, it looked as if the match was going to go to OT, but a locked hands call as time expired gave him the 6-5 decision win.
Finally, Meneweather had a quarters bye, and then a medical forfeit in the semis to reach the finals uncontested. After waiting all day to wrestle, he wasted no time in pinning his opponent from the Coast Guard in just 1:16 to win the crown. Meneweather has now reached the 20-win milestone on the season, with 12 pins.
Elsewhere, AF got bonus point wins from multiple grapplers. Sophomore Sidney Flores notched a tech fall on his way to a runner-up spot. Junior Lenny Petersen had two tech falls himself, as well as a second place finish.
Junior Cody Surratt had two pins in the consolation rounds to place third. Sophomore Jake Thompson also had a pair of pins in a runner-up day. Junior Casey Jumps notched two falls in a third place finish. Finally, sophomore Kayne Hutchison had two falls before dropping his finals match.
Next up, the Falcons hit the road for their first two road Big 12 duals of the season. First is against Utah Valley, Thursday, Jan. 30, followed by a showdown with Fresno State, Sunday, Feb. 2.
