AF is led by freshman 125 pounder Cody Phippen who is in the consi semis
TULSA. Okla. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team advanced four of its wrestlers to day two of the 2020 Big 12 Wrestling Championships after day one, Saturday evening, March 7, at the BOK Center. Freshman 125 pounder Cody Phippen led the way, advancing to the consolation semifinals.
Joining Phippen on day two will be juniors Lenny Petersen at 141 lbs. and Cody Surratt at 174 lbs., as well as sophomore Jake Thompson at 184 lbs., as all three are in the seventh place match of their respective weight classes.
The biggest highlight of the day was Phippen, as the freshman made his Air Force debut after not competing during the regular season. In the prelim round, Phippen got his AF career started on one of the highest notes he could, knocking off #2 seeded Jay Schwarm of UNI by 4-2 decision.
Then in the quarterfinal round, Phippen followed that up with a commanding 10-3 decision win over #7 seeded Christian Moody of Oklahoma to get to the semifinals. In the semis, Phippen fell to #3 seeded Alex Mackall of Iowa State, 7-3, to fall into the consolation semis, where he will rematch with Schwarm.
For Petersen, Surratt, and Thompson, all three fell in the quarterfinals to the No. 1 seeded wrestlers to drop down into the consolations. In the consolations, all three claimed victory, Petersen by 12-8 decision over Trevor Jeffries of Wyoming, Surratt via fall over Scott Joll of WVU, and Thompson by 4-3 decision over Noah Cressell of NDSU. All three were then felled in their next consis match, and all three will wrestle for seventh place tomorrow.
Finally, sophomore Jared Van Vleet had AF's other big upset win of the tournament, as he knocked off #6 seeded Reece Witcraft of Oklahoma State by 9-6 decision. Van Vleet revenged his loss to Witcraft in the dual earlier this season. After that, Van Vleet fell in his next two matches to fall out of the tournament.
The four remaining Falcons will resume action tomorrow, March 8. Action at the BOK Center will begin at 10 a.m. MT.
