AF has a pair in the consolation semifinals
TULSA, Okla. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team concluded action on day one of the 2021 Big 12 Championships Saturday evening, March 6, at the BOK Center in Tulsa. The Falcons advanced three grapplers into day two of the tournament.
AF is led by senior 174 pounder Cody Surratt and freshman heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson, who are both in the consolation semifinals. Joining the duo on day two is sophomore 125 pounder Cody Phippen, who will wrestle for seventh place.
Surratt, who came into the tournament as the fifth seed, became just the second Falcon in the Big 12 era to advance into the semifinals. Surratt began his day in the prelims, and advanced with a 3-1 decision. In the quarterfinals, Surratt had a steady lead on #4 seeded Lance Runyon of UNI, before an injury default allowed Surratt to get to the semis.
In the semis, he matched up with the top seed, Demetrius Romero of Utah Valley. He battled through the match, but fell to Romero by major decision to fall into the consolation semis tomorrow. He will re-match with #3 seeded Dustin Plott of Oklahoma State, who he faced in the dual earlier this season, and fell to by a slim 5-3 decision.
For Hendrickson, the sixth seed, his work today came in the consolation rounds. After dropping his prelim match to #17 nationally ranked Dalton Robertson of Northern Colorado, the freshman won back-to-back matches in the backend.
He led off with an impressive 13-3 major decision win over #5 seeded Austin Harris of Oklahoma State to revenge his loss in the dual earlier this season. He followed that up with a solid 9-5 decision win to get to the consolation semis. He will re-match with #7 seeded Brandon Metz of NDSU, who Hendrickson pinned in the dual last month.
Phippen, who entered at the sixth seed, got a prelim bye to match-up with #3 seeded Trevor Mastrogiovanni of Oklahoma State. He worked the match to sudden victory, but was downed by a takedown to fall to the consolations.
In the first round there, he won by 4-0 decision to advance into the consolation quarters. He matched up with #7 seeded Kysen Terukina of ISU. It was a back and forth match, but Phippen ultimately fell by 9-6 decision, placing him in the seventh place match. That will come against Jace Koelzer of UNC.
Elsewhere on the day, senior Parker Simington and junior Kayne Hutchison each won their prelim matchups, Hutchison's coming by tech fall. Both then lost back-to-back matches to fall out of the tournament. As a team, AF has scored 25 points and sit in 11th place overall.
Day two of the Big 12 Championships comes tomorrow, March 7, with Session III starting at 9 a.m. MT.
