Trapper Carpenter retiring after decorated military, civilian career

William "Trapper" Carpenter, associate athletic director for recruiting support at the Air Force Academy, is retiring after a long, decorated career in the military and as a civilian. Carpenter, a 1973 Academy graduate, has been in his current role since September 2007 and is concluding 22 years overall at the Academy. Carpenter previously served the Academy as vice commandant and director of admissions before coming to the athletic department.
Carpenter has played a major role in admitting around 300 cadet-athletes to the Academy annually. His behind-the-scenes knowledge and relationship building was pivotal to the recruiting success of 27 intercollegiate sports.
Carpenter was a decorated F-15 pilot, a two-time squadron commander and was vice wing commander during his 38-year military career. He accumulated more than 5,100 hours as a command pilot, including 3,400 in F-15 A/B/C/D/E aircraft.
