Kevin Anderson has been named associate athletic director at the Air Force Academy, according to an announcement today from Director of Athletics Nathan Pine. Anderson comes to the Academy from CarrSports Consulting, where he was a vice president.
"Air Force Athletics got better today with the addition of Kevin Anderson," Pine said. "Kevin's enthusiasm for our mission of developing leaders of character and his passion for mentoring cadets and coaches is a perfect fit at our Academy. It is a true honor to welcome such a giant in the field of collegiate athletics administration to our Falcon Family."
"It is with tremendous pride that I look forward to working with the outstanding cadet-athletes and coaches of the United States Air Force Academy," Anderson said.
"As a lifelong friend an admirer of Kevin Anderson, I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Kevin, his family and the Air Force Academy on its decision to hire Kevin as an associate athletic director," Justice Martin Jenkins, associate justice, California Supreme Court said. "Throughout his distinguished career in college athletics, Kevin Anderson has garnered a well-deserved reputation for innovation in the athletic administration space. He has been an important voice for full inclusion and equity in athletics—serving on several important NCAA committees tasked with improving the collegiate experience for all student athletes. As important, he is a cherished mentor to thousands of young men and women who, following Kevin's example, have graduated from college and gone on to distinguished careers in service of others. In hiring Kevin Anderson, the Air Force Academy has hired a man whose lived experience truly reflects the Academy's core values: Integrity first, Service before self and Excellence!"
"During the course of Kevin's Hall of Fame career as an athletics administrator, he always exhibited a passion for the betterment of his student athletes and this position at Air Force will allow him to follow his passion," said Bob Veccione, chief executive officer of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA). "Kevin's leadership experience coupled with his communications skills will enable him to educate and consult the cadets on the myriad of new NCAA legislation optimizing the student athlete experience. All of us at NACDA are extremely happy to have Kevin back on campus."
"Kevin was an outstanding athletic director at the University of Maryland where I worked with him as a member of the Board of Regents. He excelled in building lasting bonds with the student-athletes and I am sure in his new role in sports administration at the Air Force Academy he will shine again," said Tom McMillen, president and CEO of Lead1 Association. "Kevin understands the importance of building strong relationships with administrators, coaches, and student-athletes. With his previous experience at West Point, he also understands the unique role of our military academies in developing outstanding leaders for the future. I look forward to seeing him excel in his new role at one of our nation's finest institutions."
Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to educate, develop and serve student-athletes through a culture of academic athletic excellence has been at the core of Anderson's 35-plus-year career in college athletics. Anderson served as the director of athletics at the University of Maryland (College Park) prior to CarrSports Consulting.
During nearly eight years at Maryland, Anderson's vision, external revenue successes, and business acumen elevated Terrapin Athletics to previously unseen heights across a variety of platforms. He was a transformational leader achieving unprecedented academic, athletic and fiscal success. Anderson laid the foundation for Maryland's future by deftly directing the athletic department strategic plan – The Maryland Way (2012-2017).
Maryland made a significant impact and lasting impression on the Big Ten under his leadership, claiming a league-best 25 regular season and conference championships and boasting a myriad of highlights and outstanding performances during an impressive first three seasons. Maryland also experienced significant benchmarks academically, posting two of its three highest departmental APR scores since the inception of the measure in 2003. Seven programs earned perfect APR scores and 15 teams maintained or improved their multiyear scores.
In addition to the Terrapins' athletic success in winning several national and conference championships, and a significant improvement in the classroom, Anderson initiated a $200 Million campaign to construct the Athletic High Performance Center.
Prior to Maryland, Anderson served as the Director of Athletics at the United States Military Academy where he oversaw 25 sport programs and 900 cadet-athletes. On the field, he led a broad-based resurgence that saw 20 Army teams earn berths in NCAA championships, including programs in 10 different sports. All areas of revenue generation – ticket sales, sponsorships, and fundraising – increased during his tenure. Anderson's previous athletic administrative experience includes various roles at three PAC-12 schools: Stanford, Cal-Berkeley and Oregon State.
Anderson served on several national committees over the years, including the NCAA Committee to Promote Cultural Diversity, NCAA Minority Opportunities Athletic Association, NCAA Women's Basketball Oversight Committee, NCAA Division I Baseball Committee, NCAA Men's Basketball Academic Enhancement Group, and the NCAA Men's Basketball Issues Committee (Chair). He also participated on the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Board of Directors as President, served as Chair of the McLendon Minority Scholarship Steering Committee and was a member of the LEAD1 Executive Committee.
In 2007, Anderson was recognized as the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award. He was inducted into the San Francisco State University Alumni Hall of Fame (2016) and the United Negro College Fund honored him with the Meritorious Service Award. Most recently, Anderson was inducted into the NACDA Hall of Fame Class of 2020.
Anderson is a 1979 graduate of San Francisco State University with a bachelor's degree in political science. He has attended the Sports Management Institute's executive management program and is a product of the new manager school at Xerox.
Anderson and his wife, Moira, have four children – daughters, Olivia and Michaela, and sons, Kevin Jr. and Chauncey.
