AMES, IOWA – In the second-straight day of Big 12 dual action, Air Force battled to a 27-12 loss against the nation's fifth-best dual squad, Iowa State, Saturday afternoon, in the Hilton Coliseum. Air Force drops to 1-6 in the conference with a 3-6 mark overall, while the Cyclones improve to 13-1 with a 6-0 record in the Big 12.
The meet started at 165 where Trey Brisker, commander of Cadet Squadron 14, put No. 32 Isaac Judge to task, coming up a point shy of victory in a 4-3 decision loss.
Air Force standout Sam Wolf followed up in the 174 bout, taking on 18th-ranked Joel Devine. Wolf, who won eight-straight matches prior to the bout, left everything on the mat in a narrow 3-2 loss to Devine. The Cyclones, up by six on the team score, won the ensuing 184 and 197 bouts with bonus points.
Falcon heavyweight, sixth-ranked Wyatt Hendrickson, wrangled the momentum for Air Force with a pin against No. 21 Sam Schuyler at 4:31. Hendrickson, undefeated on the season (16-0), remains atop all Division I wrestlers in pins this season.
Senior team captain Jared Van Vleet took stage next, taking on No. 27 Kysen Terukina. Van Vleet, up in the early rounds, was unable to hold off the Cyclone, dropping an 8-6 decision. Air Force senior Sidney Flores took center stage next but was unable to wrestle down No. 33 Ramazan Attasauov, dropping a 9-2 decision.
The Falcons sent forth Cody Phippen in the ensuing 141 bout. The native of Platte City, Missouri, grinded his way back into the win column against Charlie Klepps, posting a convincing 6-1 decision over the Cyclone to lift AF to nine team points.
Iowa State rebutted with a major decision at 149 as the lengthy No. 22 Jarrett Degen outscored Dylan Martinez, 11-3.
Air Force exited Hilton Coliseum on a high note as Giano Petrucelli battled back into the win column by blanking ISU's Andrew Flora, 3-0, lifting the Falcons to their final 12-point team score.
