Air Force's future team captains embarked on a trip the Gettysburg National Cemetery in Pennsylvania as part of a leadership experience provided by the Air Force Academy Foundation though generous donations from former Air Force Academy Alumni and were led by USAFA permanent party staff; Col Marcus Corbett, Col Margaret Martin, Lt Col Peter Euler, Maj Carly Omizo, Coach Sam Barber, Mr. John Abbatiello and Dr. Jacqueline Hooper.
During the whirlwind tour of Gettysburg, the cadet athletes toured several sites from McPherson's Ridge, Little Round Top, High Water Mark and the Gettysburg Cemetery. The cadets engaged in an information-packed, history-filled, leadership experience for Air Force Academy athletic team captains and leaders.
"I knew about TCEP through my teammates that participated in the program," Kamri Heath said, a rising senior on the women's basketball team. "I knew that I would get the chance to meet all the other team captains, but we did more than that, we got to learn about the culture of other teams. We learned what worked best for them and how to incorporate that into our own teams."
"It's a privilege for members of the Department of History to support the TCEP Gettysburg staff ride," Colonel Margaret Martin said, a history professor at USAFA and Faculty Athletic Representative. "We enjoy working with AD and CCLD to help the rising team captains think about both their team leadership role and the Profession of Arms through the lens of the Gettysburg battlefield. These young men and women are impressive athletes and thoughtful cadets. It was great to get to know the new team captains!"

"I was most inspired by the brave men who faced death with no remorse on that battlefield," said Garrett Kuchan, a wrestler heading into his junior season. "They stepped up for their country and faced death under the command of their leadership. Knowing that men and women of today's country could someday put their faith and trust in me in the same way those soldiers did on that day is humbling."
"I was struck by the commitment, earnestness, and reflection of our Cadet Athletes as they struggle with the responsibility of NCAA athletic leadership," Interim Vice Athletic Director Colonel Marcus Corbett said. "The opportunity to reflect on the successes and failures displayed by the leaders in the historical battle allowed the permanent party facilitators to guide the team captains through small group discussions on leadership traits, challenges, and learnable moments that generated ideas and thoughts that each of the team captains will be able to put into immediate use as they build culture, improve communication, solve problems, and lead their peers on the field, court, ice, or in the pool. It was truly a pleasure to see them inspired to help create a winning culture and leave a legacy of success in their team and program."
"To anyone who gets to take this trip in the future, be present." Heath continued. "Be present when they talk about the history of the battlefields around you, be present when you break out into group discussions. Good leaders can learn from others, and this is the perfect opportunity."
