STILLWATER, Okla. – Backed by a Top-30 finish from senior Sam Gilman, the 11th-ranked Air Force men's cross country team picked up a ninth-place finish at the prestigious Cowboy Jamboree this morning (Sept. 24) on the Oklahoma State Cross Country Course in Stillwater. On the women's side, sophomore Lindsey Peters also gained a Top-30 placement to lead the Falcons to a 14th-place finish.
Gilman completed the 8K course in a time of 23:52.5 to finish 28th in the 250-runner field that included more than half of the teams ranked in the top 30 of the latest USTFCCCA national standings. Gilman was one of four Air Force seniors to account for scoring finishes on Saturday, as just 0.7-seconds separated classmates Ethan Marshall (24:08.2, 45th), Ryan Johnson (24:08.6, 48th) and Scott Maison (24:08.9, 49th). Junior Sean Maison rounded out the Falcons' scoring lineup, as he clocked a time of 24:11.8 to finish 56th.
The men 223 points to finish ninth in the 27-team meet that included 17 nationally-ranked squads – eight of which are in the latest top 10.
In the women's race, which kicked off the Jamboree earlier than initially planned to avoid the heat forecasted for later in the day, Peters posted a 6K time of 21:01.6 to finish 30th out of the 223 runners in the overall field. Her sophomore classmates Halle Hamilton and Ally Peterson both finished within the top 75, as Hamilton crossed the finish line in 21:21.3 (54th) and Peterson raced to a time of 21:32.6 (71st). Senior Maddie Edwards added a time of 22:02.0 to finish 108th, while freshman India Jones rounded out the scoring lineup with a 6K debut of 22:06.8 (110th).
The women accumulated 327 points to finish 14th in the 20-team women's race that included 12 nationally-ranked teams.
"It was good to have the group back out competing at a large-scale national event," Air Force Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Ryan Cole said. "There were positives for both genders, but both groups also ran a bit ambitiously early in each race. On a tough course like this one, we paid for it at the end of the races in some key areas. But we came to this event for the competition, to see where we're currently at, and also to see what adjustments need to be made the next time we aim to be racing here at the NCAA Championships in November."
Eight other Falcons also raced on the OSU course this morning, including junior Eli Bennett (24:12.6, 58th), sophomore Bryce Lentz (24:18.4, 70th) and senior Aidan Boyle (25:25.2, 134th) in the men's 8K race and junior Rayna Fruchey (22:16.3, 122nd), sophomore Sydney Weaber (22:48.4, 151st), junior Rachel Crytser (23:01.5, 156th), junior Rebecca Wusinich (23:08.5, 160th) and sophomore Tiaree Towler (23:12.6, 164th) in the women's 6K race.
Air Force returns to competition on Friday, Oct. 14, when it heads to Madison, Wis., for the prestigious Nuttycombe Invitational.
