COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After a pair of strong competitions last weekend, Air Force seniors Sam Gilman and Jaret Prete were honored by the Mountain West this afternoon (Jan. 31), as Gilman was named the MW Men's Track Athlete of the Week and Prete repeated as the MW Men's Field Athlete of the Week. It is the seventh career track award for Gilman and the fourth field honor for Prete.
In his first race of the 2023 calendar year, Gilman cruised to a conference-leading time in the mile at the Colorado Invitational on Friday, Jan. 27. Clocking a time of 4:04.61 (3:58.65a) to win the 14-runner Invitational section, Gilman recorded the fastest mile by a senior in Academy history and a mark just shy of his own Air Force Record. Gilman, a native of Hilton Head Island, S.C., currently leads the Mountain West by nearly three seconds and is ranked No. 28 in the nation.
Prete, the first MW athlete in three years to repeat an indoor weekly award, improved his conference-leading distance in the weight throw at the Texas Tech Open on Friday, Jan. 27, unleashing a season-best throw of 19.79m (64-11.25") in the "A" section of competition. With that toss, which came on his third attempt and improved his own Air Force Senior Class Record, the Amherst, Ohio, native currently leads the Mountain West by more than three feet and moved up to No. 53 in the national standings.
