Air Force Concludes F&M Open with Three Placers

LACASTER, Pa. – A contingent of 15 Falcons concluded their efforts at the Franklin and Marshall David H. Lehman Open with three place-winning finishes, Friday afternoon, at the Alumni Sports and Fitness Center. As a team, Air Force finished 11th in the field of 32 teams with 76 team points.
Falcon junior and 197-pounder Calvin Sund led the squad with a fifth-place finish on the event. Sund opened the event with a dominating 16-0 technical fall over Maryland's Larry Vola. In his fifth-place bout, Sund made a statement with a lightning-fast pin over Kent State's Blake Schaffer (0:38).
Air Force junior 165-pounder Giano Petrucelli finished sixth in his respective division with a 5-1 record on the day. Petrucelli was a force to be reckoned with as he finished four matches with bonus points while giving up a narrow 7-4 loss in the championship bracket. In his first three matches, Petrucelli outscored his opponents, 35-3, recording three major decisions en route to the quarterfinals bout. In the consolation of two, Petrucelli logged a pin in 3:00 against Mason Spears of Brown.
Standout freshman 125-pounder Tucker Owens placed eighth after a hard-fought day on the mats. He opened the tournament with a pin in the first round (1:14). Owens finished 3-2 on the day, posting a no contest loss in the seventh-place bout.
Another strong performance came from senior 149-pounder Dylan Martinez who went 4-1 on the event. Martinez won by fall (2:40) and technical fall (17-0, 4:55) in his opening two bouts, respectively. Garrett Kuchan (141) who went 3-2 on the day. Freshman 165-pounder Seamus Casey posted two 8-0 major decisions to open the tournament, eventually finishing 2-2.
Next up, the Falcons open the dual slate for the first time in 2023 as they host a pair of squads in double-header action on Friday, January 13, at Clune Arena. Air Force will host No. 24 Cal Poly at 6 p.m., and then follow up with Big 12 action against No. 6 Missouri immediately after at 7:30 p.m. Fans can follow along on FloWrestling.
