BATHURST, Australia – With a 21st-place finish, Air Force freshman Max Sannes helped Team USA to an historic bronze medal at the 2023 World Athletics U20 Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia, on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Completing the 8km course at Mount Panorama Cross Country in a time of 26:24, Sannes was the No. 3 finisher for Team USA. With just 47 seconds (and 12 places) separating the top five runners, Team USA scored 81 points to finish third in the 11-nation meet – claiming the first team medal for the U20 squad at the World Championships since 1982.
Sannes, who captured the Mountain West Freshman of the Year honors in 2022 as a member of the Falcons' conference championship cross country team, earned his spot on the world team after finishing fifth at the USATF U20 Cross Country Nationals last month in Virginia.
