
Air Force swims to impactful first day at WAC Championships

PHARR, Texas- The Falcons ended the first day of the WAC Championships near the top of the leaderboard, as Air Force garnered 95 team points on Wednesday, good for second among the seven teams.
A pair of school records were broken in the process, as the 800 Free Relay team of Camden Swigart, James Winterfield, Jack VanValkenburg, and Wen Zhang swam to a second-place time of 6:22.67. The foursome broke the previous school record time of 6:24.17 that was set just a season ago at the conference championships.
The group's work awarded Air Force 34 team points.
Wen Zhang was first off the line, and finished his 200-yard split with a time of 1:31.62, breaking his own school record set earlier this season. Zhang's previous-best time of 1:31.99 was set in November at the Art Adamson Invitational.
Alex Kenyon had a superb day atop the boards, as his preliminary score in the one-meter dive totaled 280.55, good for fifth overall. In the championship round, Kenyon went above and beyond, being judged for a score of 304.20 to place third.
Kenyon's work on the first day of the WAC Championships slid 16 points towards the Falcons.
As well, the 200 Medley Relay team of Grant Afman, Tory Bartlett, Gabriel Bartolomei, and Matthew Lattin placed fourth in the event, timing out at 1:28.35 to score 30 team points.
Air Force will pick up the action again tomorrow, with the championship rounds scheduled for 5:00 pm MT.
