U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force rifle team finished third in air rifle and seventh overall at the NCAA Rifle Championships, Saturday, March 11, in Akron, Ohio.
Alaska won the air rifle (2380) and overall national titles (4729). TCU was second in both air rifle (2379) and aggregate (4717). Air Force shot a 2375 to finish third in air rifle. The Falcons entered the national meet ranked eighth in the nation and finished seventh with an aggregate score of 4697.
Junior Peninah D'Souza qualified for the finals in air rifle with a 596. She was the Falcons' highest finisher with a sixth-place finish in the finals. Sophomore Lauren Hurley shot 594 in air rifle, followed by Scott Rockett (593). Jordan Williams and Morgan Kreb each shot a 592 in air rifle.
In aggregate scoring, Rockett was the top Falcon with an 1179 and placed 11th overall. D'Souza shot an 1174, followed by Hurley (1173), Williams (1171) and Kreb (1170).
"The team fought hard all weekend," head coach Launi Meili said. "The shooting was intense and focused. While we didn't have any scores that were outside of our average for the year, we just didn't have any scores high enough to push us up in the standings. We went into nationals ranked eighth and we came in third in air rifle and seventh overall, so we did move in the right direction. Peninah was our highest shooter in air rifle and Scott was our top performer in smallbore. We were in the mix, but we just needed a few more good scores to get up with the pack."
