COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Following his record-setting performance in the 5000-meter run at the Payton Jordan Invitational last weekend, Air Force senior Sam Gilman was named the Mountain West Men's Track Athlete of the Week by the conference office this afternoon (April 25).
With the award - the ninth weekly MW Track honor of his career, Gilman becomes the most decorated MW Athlete of the Week in Air Force history, as his latest honor broke the previous record of eight that he had shared with former Academy standouts Dylan Bell, Patrick Corona and Shelley Spires.
Clocking a career-best 5000-meter time of 13:30.36, Gilman broke his own Air Force Record and accounted for the third-fastest time in Mountain West history at the Payton Jordan Invitational on April 21. The senior from Hilton Head Island, S.C., earned the top collegiate finish and placed third overall in a stacked Invitational field that included elite NCAA and international runners, while his time, a 0.46-second personal improvement, is the fastest ever by a service academy runner.
Gilman, who leads the conference by more than 12 seconds, is currently tied for 11th in the NCAA.
