
Falcons find success to open new season

GRAND JUNCTION- Air Force traveled westward to open the 2023-24 season, competing at the Intermountain Shootout on the campus of Colorado Mesa. On the first day of competition, the Falcons ended Friday's debut meet with a 1-3 record, defeating Colorado State-Pueblo in head-to-head competition while dropping direct competition against Utah, Colorado Mesa, and BYU.
The teams scores from Friday evening are as follows:
Air Force (167.00) - Colorado State-Pueblo (34.00)
Utah (115.50) - Air Force (86.50)
Colorado Mesa (116.00) - Air Force (89.00)
BYU (120.00) - Air Force (85.00)
Allana Clarke was the lone Falcon to finish first in her event, as the senior provided a winning swim in the 50 Butterfly. Clarke touched out at 25.53, narrowly besting Colorado Mesa's Kiara Borchardt's 25.86.
In the same 50 Butterfly Finals, freshman Amber Martin swam well in her first collegiate competition, squeezing in a third-place finish with a time of 25.89.
Mandy Fleetwood raced to a second-place standing in the 100 IM. The sophomore clocked in at 59.86, one of only two swimmers to secure a sub-minute time. Alex Clark wasn't far behind her teammate, placing fifth following a time of 1:00.17.
The Air Force relay teams provided consistency, as the pair of the Falcons "A" teams each secured third-place swims. The Team of Clarke, Anna Ashley, Abby Turner and Naomi Furman capped the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:51.31. Turner, Ryan Mills, Catherine Dean and Audrey Laganelli also managed a third-place finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:35.77.
Furman and Fleetwood gave Air Force a solid showing in the 100 Breaststroke with the duo finishing third and fourth. Furman clocked in at 1:04.94, while Fleetwood finished with a time of 1:05.73.
On the diving boards, Anna Scofield was judged for 224.20 points in the 3-Meter dive, good for fourth-overall. Kinzie Etzelmiller finished eighth in the same dive, scoring 209.55 points.
In a hotly-contested 50 Freestyle Finals, Turner touched out at 24.08 to place fifth.
Air Force will complete its time in Grand Junction on Saturday, September 30 with a scheduled start time of 10:30 am MT.
