NANJING, China – Former Air Force Academy star Sam Gilman (Class of 2023) capped his indoor season with an impressive fourth-place finish in the 3000-meter run at the World Indoor Championships on Saturday, March 22, in Nanjing, China.
Gilman, who captured a bronze medal at the USATF Indoor Championships last month to earn his spot on Team USA, clocked a time of 7:47.19 – just 0.1 second out of a podium finish. Running near the back of the 12-man final heading into the final 1000 meters, Gillman slowly began to pick off his competitors and – using that signature finishing speed that Air Force fans came to expect during his stellar Academy career – overtook the No. 3 runner – Australia's Ky Robinson, who claimed multiple NCAA titles while at Stanford. The two runners battled for position over the final 300, but Robinson edged Gilman at the line in a thrilling finish. Gilman was the top American finisher in the 3000-meter run.
