COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The accolades continue to accumulate for Air Force junior standout Texas Tanner, who was named the Mountain West Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year this afternoon (June 26). A native of Sheridan, Wyo., Tanner is the program's first thrower to be honored as the league's top athlete.
Tanner finished fourth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships – becoming the first Air Force thrower in 60 years to earn All-America distinction in a men's throwing event and accounting for the Mountain West's best hammer throw finish since 2003. One of nine athletes in the nation to qualify to the opening round of the NCAA Championships in three throwing events, Tanner advanced to the national finals in two – collecting First-Team All-America honors in the hammer and honorable mention status in the discus throw.
After using Meet Record performances to successfully defend his conference titles in the discus and hammer at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships, Tanner was named the Field Performer of the Meet for the second time in as many years. A five-time MW Field Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season, Tanner reset the Air Force Records in the discus and hammer three times – finishing the season with the best distances by any Service Academy thrower, the fourth-best discus mark in conference history (208'7") and a Mountain West Record in the hammer throw (248'9").
With today's announcement, the Falcons have captured nine Mountain West Athlete of the Year awards since 2015, as Tanner joined Sam Gilman (2022 indoor, 2022 outdoor, 2023 indoor), Mahala Norris (2021 outdoor), Michael Rhoads (2019 outdoor, 2019 indoor), Jamiel Trimble (2016 outdoor), and Joey Uhle (2015 outdoor).
The honor is awarded to the best male and female student-athletes in the conference following the conclusion of the outdoor season. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by the head coaches at each member institution.
