NEW ORLEANS – Air Force cross country runners India Jones and Ella Johnson were named All-Academic Athletes by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this afternoon (Jan. 29), while both the men's and women's teams were honored with All-Academic Team status by the USTFCCCA for their success in the classroom.
It is the first USTFCCCA academic selection in cross country for both Falcons who became the 13th and 14th members of AFXC to garner academic honors at the Division I level. Jones (3.79 GPA, biology) and Johnson (3.37 GPA, civil engineering), who each served as the Falcons' top finisher in three meets this fall, achieved all-conference (Jones sixth, Johnson seventh) and all-region (Jones 11th, Johnson 12th) honors during the postseason – with the latter distinction, in conjunction with their GPA, securing their spot on the nation's list of All-Academic Athletes.
This was the seventh season that both squads have captured All-Academic Team status in the same season, with the men holding a 3.10 GPA and the women finishing the fall with a mark of 3.08. Overall, the men have earned the academic honor 12 times, while the women have claimed the distinction in 14 seasons, including seven of the last eight.
To receive individual academic citations, athletes must meet the GPA minimum of 3.25 and place within the top-25 of their respective regional championship, while team status is earned by squads maintaining a GPA of at least 3.00 under the association's specific formula.
